This amazing film is based on the novel by Harper Lee. It's the story of a man named Atticus Finch who is bringing up his two children during the Depression Era in the deep south. The film stars Gregory Peck, Brock Peters, and Mary Badham. The film was released in 1962 and was nominated for eight Academy Awards including best director, best actor (which Gregory Peck won), and best actress (Mary Badham) in a supporting role.
At the 35th Academy Awards, Mary Badham was the youngest actress to ever be nominated. Mary was only ten!
To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in rural Alabama, during the Depression Era. Table settings were practical and utilitarian - that doesn't mean they weren't beautiful - just not fussy.
I decorated this table simply with vintage pieces. The water glasses are green depression glass, and the wine glasses were my grandmother's. The Rosewood vase also belonged to my grandmother and is from that era.
Sweet tea is the refreshment of the South. This cocktail is made by letting a tea bag steep in vodka and setting it in the sun. A squeeze of fresh orange then topped off with cranberry juice makes it perfect for any festive occasion!
So crispy! So tasty! So Southern!

"Don't make a sound," he said. "Don't get in a row of collards whatever you do.." The character of Dill Harris was said to be inspired by Harper Lee's childhood friend Truman Capote.
Collard greens are the perfect southern side dish. They are easy to prepare and have a strong distinct flavor.
Scout dresses as a ham for her fall pageant. Guess what's for dinner?
We made a maple syrup and red wine glaze for the ham. In the film, little Walter Cunningham drenches his food in maple syrup. We used just a bit, and the sweetness added just the right flavor.
The kind Miss Maudie joins Atticus for a cup of coffee.
The Lane Cake dates back to 1898. Miss Emma Lane created this cake and won 1st Prize at the Georgia State Fair. It's a white-layer cake loaded with dried fruit and topped with royal icing. It's a Southern favorite!
