This 1977 romantic comedy was written by Neil Simon, directed by Herbert Ross, and stars Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason, Quin Cummings, and Barbara Rhoades. Any artist will appreciate this film! New York City, sublet apartments, awkward auditions, arrogant actors, unemployed dancers..ah the theatre! The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actor which went to Richard Dreyfuss.
It was so great to chat with Barbara about her career, her work on numerous TV classics such as Columbo, The Partridge Family, The Odd Couple, and Murder She Wrote, as well as her experiences working on The Goodbye Girl.
The audition scene. Marsha Mason plays the role of Paula McFadden, a single mother, and Broadway dancer struggling to make ends meet. Mason was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
I always think of bold colors when I think of 1970s decor, and orange and green were definitely a '70s combo. The bright orange Gerber Daisies add the perfect "flower power" to our table.
The bright pops of orange stood out to me and inspired the table setting.
A perfect cocktail for a New York movie. And for this cocktail - you stir.
Such a delicious combination! We kept our hors d'oeuvres simple. Crisp, sweet, thinly sliced apples top a sharp New York cheddar cheese and a buttery crunchy crouton. It pairs nicely with the Manhattans.
Pasta - the starving artists' staple. What else could we serve?!
A pasta dish was a must for this dinner party. This delicious recipe with radicchio and sun-dried tomatoes was inspired by one of my favorite places to eat in New York City back in the 90s - Pete's Place on 21st and 3rd Avenue. The restaurant is no longer there, but this recipe pays homage. It's hearty and tasty. A light side salad, a crusty loaf of Italian bread, and dinner is served!
The chocolate pudding in this scene inspired our dessert. The adorable Quinn Cummings was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lucy McFadden. We made homemade chocolate Pots de creme with a touch of coffee. So good! Bib optional.
Small little cappuccino cups of homemade Pots de Creme are a delicious dessert. They are rich and delicious - a little taste is all you need. Serve with a small dollop of whipped cream and some fresh strawberries alongside, for a real crowd pleaser.
