Everyone knows the classic music: "dumm.....dumm...DAH dummm!" It's an iconic tune that launches an iconic scene. The film was directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick and was nominated for four Academy Awards (including best director). 2001: A Space Odyssey is a cult classic, and for good reason: there is SO much to talk about!
Keir Dullea who played astronaut David Bowman joined us for dinner to chat about working with Stanley Kubrick, his decades-long career, and performing his most famous role... Yeah, that was amazing!
Keir explains how the "airlock" scene was actually done.
For the table setting, I wanted to recreate the look of the Space Station. The funky, bright pink chairs and the stark white room look so fresh and modern - even now!
The idea for this cocktail was inspired by HAL the computer and his large red eye. It's a twist on the classic Negroni. It's a vivid bright red color and a little bitter - just like HAL!
Taken from the scene when the astronauts sit down for a meal. I wanted to recreate the look of the astronauts' prefab meals. But we served fresh vegetables and dips - not freeze-dried or boxed!
(I found the cool little rectangular dishes at The Goodwill!)
2001: A Space Odyssey was released in 1968. In the 1960s gelatin was all the rage. It may seem a little strange to think about tomato-flavored gelatin, but it's light and delicious. It's a twist on the classic shrimp cocktail - cool and refreshing. Taste the 1960s!
When deciding what to serve for dinner, I did some research. Balsamic vinegar appeared in quite a few recipes in the year 2001. This is a straightforward yet tasty - prep-the-day-before recipe - which makes any dinner that much easier.
We thought for dessert we'd like to incorporate the cool spacey look of the Stargate sequence. By mixing up some white chocolate, gelatin, and some food coloring, We recreated the psychedelic effect. Be sure the cake is cold and frosted. So many color combinations - so many possibilities!
